GOALS-JWST: Mid-infrared Molecular Gas Excitation Probes the Local Conditions of Nuclear Star Clusters and the Active Galactic Nucleus in the LIRG VV 114

The enormous increase in mid-IR sensitivity and spatial and spectral resolution provided by the JWST spectrographs enables, for the first time, detailed extragalactic studies of molecular vibrational bands. This opens an entirely new window for the study of the molecular interstellar medium in luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). We present a detailed analysis of rovibrational bands of gas-phase CO, H2O, C2H2, and HCN toward the heavily obscured eastern nucleus of the LIRG VV 114, as observed by NIRSpec and the medium resolution spectrograph on the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI MRS). Spectra extracted from apertures of 130 pc in radius show a clear dichotomy between the obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN) and two intense starburst regions. We detect the 2.3 μm CO bandheads, characteristic of cool stellar atmospheres, in the star-forming regions, but not toward the AGN. Surprisingly, at 4.7 μm, we find highly excited CO (T ex ≈ 700–800 K out to at least rotational level J = 27) toward the star-forming regions, but only cooler gas (T ex ≈ 200 K) toward the AGN. We conclude that only mid-infrared pumping through the rovibrational lines can account for the equilibrium conditions found for CO and H2O in the deeply embedded starbursts. Here, the CO bands probe regions with an intense local radiation field inside dusty young massive star clusters or near the most massive young stars. The lack of high-excitation molecular gas toward the AGN is attributed to geometric dilution of the intense radiation from the bright point source. SMART: Spectral energy distributions Markov chain Analysis with Radiative Transfer models

Abstract In this paper we present the publicly available open-source spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting code SMART (Spectral energy distributions Markov chain Analysis with Radiative Transfer models). Implementing a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method, SMART fits the ultraviolet to millimetre SEDs of galaxies exclusively with radiative transfer models that currently constitute four types of pre-computed libraries, which describe the starburst, active galactic nucleus (AGN) torus, host galaxy and polar dust components. An important novelty of SMART is that, although it fits SEDs exclusively with radiative transfer models, it takes comparable time to popular energy balance methods to run. Here we describe the key features of SMART and test it by fitting the multi-wavelength SEDs of the 42 local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) that constitute the HERschel Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxy Survey (HERUS) sample. The Spitzer spectroscopy data of the HERUS ULIRGs are included in the fitting at a spectral resolution, which is matched to that of the radiative transfer models. We also present other results that highlight the performance and versatility of SMART. SMART promises to be a useful tool for studying galaxy evolution in the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) era. Radio-only and Radio-to-far-ultraviolet Spectral Energy Distribution Modeling of 14 ULIRGs: Insights into the Global Properties of Infrared Bright Galaxies

We present detailed spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling of 14 local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with outstanding photometric data from the literature covering the ultraviolet–infrared (FIR) and radio bands (∼50 MHz to ∼30 GHz). We employ the CIGALE SED fitting code to model the ultraviolet–FIR–radio SED. For the radio-only SED modeling, we use the UltraNest package, leveraging its nested sampling algorithm. Combining the results from our previous study on 11 luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), we discuss the global astrophysical properties of a sample of 25 starburst galaxies (z < 0.5). Their radio spectra are frequently characterized by bends and turnovers, with no indication of ULIRGs exhibiting more complicated SEDs than LIRGs despite showing more signs of interactions. Including radio measurements in the CIGALE modeling constrained the dust luminosity and star formation rate (SFR) estimates by more than 1 order of magnitude better than previously reported for starburst galaxies. We show that total and nonthermal radio luminosity at 1.4 and 4.8 GHz frequencies can be good estimators of recent SFRs for all LIRGs and those ULIRGS with an insignificant influence of active galactic nuclei. A weaker but still significant correlation is observed between radio SFRs at 1.4 GHz and old (averaged over 100 Myr) SFRs based on SED modeling, indicative of multiple episodes of starburst activity during their lifetime. The thermal radio luminosity at 4.8 GHz is a better tracer of recent star formation than the thermal luminosity at 1.4 GHz. Statistically, our modeled nonthermal radio spectral indices do not significantly correlate with redshift, stellar mass, SFR, specific SFR, and dust mass.

Exploring the hardness of the ionising radiation with the infrared softness diagram

Aims. We explored the softness parameter in the infrared, ηIR′, whose main purpose is the characterisation of the hardness of the incident ionising radiation in emission-line nebulae. This parameter is obtained from the combination of mid-infrared wavelength range transitions corresponding to consecutive ionisation stages in star-forming regions. Methods. We compiled observational data from a sample of star-forming galaxies (SFGs), including luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs), to study the ηIR′ and its equivalent expression in two dimensions, the softness diagram. We compared them with predictions from photoionisation models to determine the shape of the ionising continuum energy distribution in each case. We also used the measured emission-line ratios as input for HCMISTRY-TEFF-IR, a code that performs a Bayesian-like comparison with photoionisation model predictions in order to quantify the equivalent effective temperature (T*) and the ionisation parameter. Results. We found similar average values within the errors of ηIR′ in (U)LIRGs (−0.57) in the rest of the SFGs (−0.51), which could be interpreted as indicative of a similar incident radiation field. This result is confirmed from the analysis using HCM-TEFF-IR, which simultaneously points to a slightly lower, although similar within the errors, T* scale for (U)LIRGs, even when a higher dust-to-gas mass ratio is considered in the models for these objects. These derived T* values are compatible with the ionisation from massive stars, without any need of harder ionising sources, both for (U)LIRGs and the rest of the SFGs. However, the derived T* in (U)LIRGs do not show any correlation with metallicity. This could be interpreted as a sign that their similar average T* values are due to the attenuation of the energetic incident flux from massive stars by the heated dust mixed with the gas. This is supported by the known very large amounts of small grains associated with the very high star formation rates measured in galaxies of this type.

The cold molecular gas in z ≳ 6 quasar host galaxies

Context. Probing the molecular gas reservoirs of z ≳ 6 quasar (QSO) host galaxies is fundamental to understanding the coevolution of star formation and black hole growth in these extreme systems. Yet, there is still an inhomogeneous coverage of molecular gas tracers for z ≳ 6 QSO hosts. Aims. To measure the average excitation and mass of the molecular gas reservoirs in the brightest z &gt; 6.5 QSO hosts, we combined new observations of CO(2–1) emission with existing observations of CO(6–5), CO(7–6), [C I] (2–1), [C II] 158 μm, and dust-continuum emission. Methods. We reduced and analysed observations of CO(2–1), taken with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, in three z = 6.5 − 6.9 QSO hosts – the highest redshift observations of CO(2–1) to date. By combining these with the nine z = 5.7 − 6.4 QSO hosts for which CO(2–1) emission has already been observed, we studied the spread in molecular gas masses and CO excitation of z ≳ 6 QSOs. Results. Two of our three QSOs, P036+03 and J0305–3150, were not detected in CO(2–1), implying more highly excited CO than in the well-studied z = 6.4 QSO J1148+5251. However, we detected CO(2–1) emission at 5.1σ for our highest-redshift target, J2348–3054, yielding a molecular gas mass of (1.2 ± 0.2)×1010 M⊙, assuming αCO = 0.8 (K km s−1 pc2)−1 and r2, 1 = 1. This molecular gas mass is equivalent to the lower limit on the dynamical mass measured previously from resolved [C II] 158 μm observations, implying that there is little mass in stars or neutral gas within the [C II]-emitting region and that a low CO-to-H2 conversion factor is applicable. On average, these z ≳ 6 QSO hosts have far higher CO(6–5)-, CO(7–6)-, and [C II] 158 μm versus CO(2–1) line ratios than the local gas-rich and IR-luminous galaxies that host active galactic nuclei, but with a large range of values, implying some variation in their interstellar medium conditions. We derived a mean CO(6–5)-to-CO(1–0) line luminosity ratio of r6, 1 = 0.9 ± 0.2. Conclusions. Our new CO(2–1) observations show that even at 780 Myr after the Big Bang, QSO host galaxies can already have molecular gas masses of 1010 M⊙, consistent with a picture in which these z ≳ 6 QSOs reside in massive starbursts that are coevolving with the accreting supermassive black holes. Their high gas versus dynamical masses and extremely high line excitation imply the presence of extremely dense and warm molecular gas reservoirs illuminated by strong interstellar radiation fields.

Dust and Cold Gas Properties of Starburst HyLIRG Quasars at z ∼ 2.5

Some high-z active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are found to reside in extreme star-forming galaxies, such as hyperluminous infrared galaxies (HyLIRGs), with AGN-removed L IR of >1013 L ⊙. In this paper, we report NOEMA observations of six apparent starburst HyLIRGs associated with optical quasars at z ∼ 2–3 in the Stripe 82 field, to study their dust and molecular CO properties. Five out of the six candidates are detected with CO(4–3) or CO(5–4) emission, and four in the 2 mm dust continuum. Based on the linewidth– LCO(1−0)′ diagnostics, we find that four galaxies are likely unlensed or weakly lensed sources. The molecular gas mass is in the range of μMH2∼0.8–9.7×1010M⊙ (with α=0.8M⊙Kkms−1pc2−1 , where μ is the unknown possible gravitational magnification factor). We fit their spectral energy distributions, after including the observed 2 mm fluxes and upper limits, and estimate their apparent (uncorrected for possible lensing effects) star formation rates (μSFRs) to be ∼400–2500 M ⊙ yr−1, with a depletion time of ∼20–110 Myr. We notice interesting offsets, of ∼10–40 kpc spatially or ∼1000–2000 km s−1 spectroscopically, between the optical quasar and the millimeter continuum or CO emissions. The observed velocity shift is likely related to the blueshifted broad-emission-line region of quasars, though mergers or recoiling black holes are also possible causes, which can explain the spatial offsets and the high intrinsic star formation rates in the HyLIRG quasar systems.

CON-quest. II. Spatially and spectrally resolved HCN/HCO+ line ratios in local luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies

Nuclear regions of ultraluminous and luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) are powered by starbursts and/or active galactic nuclei (AGNs). These regions are often obscured by extremely high columns of gas and dust. Molecular lines in the submillimeter windows have the potential to determine the physical conditions of these compact obscured nuclei (CONs). We aim to reveal the distributions of HCN and HCO$^+$ emission in local U/LIRGs and investigate whether and how they are related to galaxy properties. Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), we have conducted sensitive observations of the HCN $J$=3--2 and HCO$^+$ $J$=3--2 lines toward 23 U/LIRGs in the local Universe ($z&lt;0.07$) with a spatial resolution of sim 0.3 (sim 50--400\,pc). We detected both HCN and HCO$^+$ in 21 galaxies, only HCN in one galaxy, and neither in one galaxy. The global HCN/HCO$^+$ line ratios, averaged over scales of sim 0.5--4\,kpc, range from 0.4 to 2.3, with an unweighted mean of 1.1. These line ratios appear to have no systematic trend with bolometric AGN luminosity or star formation rate. The line ratio varies with position and velocity within each galaxy, with an average interquartile range of 0.38 on a spaxel-by-spaxel basis. In eight out of ten galaxies known to have outflows and/or inflows, we found spatially and kinematically symmetric structures of high line ratios. These structures appear as a collimated bicone in two galaxies and as a thin spherical shell in six galaxies. Non-LTE analysis suggests that the high HCN/HCO$^+$ line ratio in outflows is predominantly influenced by the abundance ratio. Chemical model calculations indicate that the enhancement of HCN abundance in outflows is likely due to high-temperature chemistry triggered by shock heating. These results imply that the HCN/HCO$^+$ line ratio can aid in identifying the outflow geometry when the shock velocity of the outflows is sufficiently high to heat the gas.

A possible relation between global CO excitation and massive molecular outflows in local ULIRGs

Local ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) have been observed to host ubiquitous molecular outflows, including the most massive and powerful ever detected. These sources have also exceptionally excited global, galaxy-integrated CO ladders. A connection between outflows and molecular gas excitation has however never been established, since previous multi-$J$ CO surveys were limited in spectral resolution and sensitivity and so they could only probe the global molecular gas conditions. In this work, we address this question using new, ground-based, sensitive heterodyne spectroscopy of multiple CO rotational lines (up to CO(7--6)) in a sample of 17 local ULIRGs. We used the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) telescope to survey the CO($J_ up lines at a high signal-to-noise ratio, and complemented these data with up APEX and Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA and ACA) observations presented in Montoya Arroyave et al. (2023). We detected a total of 74 (out of 75) CO lines, with up to six transitions per source. The resulting CO spectral line energy distributions (SLEDs) show a wide range in gas excitation, in agreement with previous studies on ULIRGs. Some CO SLEDs peak at up which we classify as ``lower excitation'', while others plateau or keep increasing up to the highest-$J$ CO transition probed, and we classify these as ``higher excitation''. Our analysis includes for completeness the results of CO SLED fits performed with a single large velocity gradient component, but our main focus is the investigation of possible links between global CO excitation and the presence of broad and/or high-velocity CO spectral components that can contain outflowing gas. We discovered an increasing trend of line width as a function of up $ of the CO transition, which is significant at the $4 level and appears to be driven by the eight sources that we classified as higher excitation. We further analyzed such higher-excitation ULIRGs, by performing a decomposition of their CO spectral profiles into multiple components and we derived CO ladders that are clearly more excited for the spectral components characterized by higher velocities and/or velocity dispersion. Because these sources are known to host widespread molecular outflows, we favor an interpretation whereby the highly excited CO-emitting gas in ULIRGs resides in galactic-scale massive molecular outflows whose emission fills a large fraction of the beam of our APEX high-$J$ CO observations. On the other hand, our results challenge alternative scenarios for which the high CO excitation in ULIRGs can be explained by classical component of the interstellar medium, such as photon- or X-ray dominated regions around the nuclear sources

Structures Of Dust and gAs (SODA): Constraining the innermost dust properties of II Zw96 with JWST observations of H2O and CO

We analyze JWST NIRSpec+MIRI/MRS observations of the infrared (IR) gas-phase molecular bands of the most enshrouded source (D1) within the interacting system and luminous IR galaxy II Zw 096. We report the detection of rovibrational lines of H2O ν2 = 1 − 0 (∼5.3–7.2 μm) and 12CO ν = 1 − 0 (∼4.45–4.95 μm) in D1. The CO band shows the R- and P-branches in emission and the spectrum of the H2O band shows the P-branch in emission and the R-branch in absorption. The H2O R-branch in absorption unveils an IR-bright embedded compact source in D1 and the CO broad component features a highly turbulent environment. From both bands, we also identified extended intense star-forming (SF) activity associated with circumnuclear photodissociation regions (PDRs), consistent with the strong emission of the ionised 7.7 μm polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon band in this source. By including the 4.5–7.0 μm continuum information derived from the H2O and CO analysis, we modelled the IR emission of D1 with a dusty torus and SF component. The torus is very compact (diameter of ∼3 pc at 5 μm) and characterised by warm dust (∼370 K), giving an IR surface brightness of ∼3.6 × 108 L⊙ pc−2. This result suggests the presence of a dust-obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN) in D1, which has an exceptionally high covering factor that prevents the direct detection of AGN emission. Our results open a new way to investigate the physical conditions of inner dusty tori via modelling the observed IR molecular bands.

An ALMA Spectroscopic Survey of the Brightest Submillimeter Galaxies in the SCUBA-2-COSMOS Field (AS2COSPEC): Physical Properties of z = 2–5 Ultra- and Hyperluminous Infrared Galaxies

We report the physical properties of the 18 brightest (S 870 μm = 12.4–19.2 mJy) and not strongly lensed 870 μm–selected dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs), also known as submillimeter galaxies (SMGs), in the COSMOS field. This sample is part of an ALMA band 3 spectroscopic survey (AS2COSPEC), and spectroscopic redshifts are measured in 17 of them at z = 2–5. We perform spectral energy distribution analyses and deduce a median total infrared luminosity of L IR = (1.3 ± 0.1) × 1013 L ⊙, infrared-based star formation rate (SFR) of SFRIR = 1390 ± 150 M ⊙ yr−1, stellar mass of M * = (1.4 ± 0.6) × 1011 M ⊙, dust mass of M dust = (3.7 ± 0.5) × 109 M ⊙, and molecular gas mass of M gas = (α CO/0.8)(1.2 ± 0.1) × 1011 M ⊙, suggesting that they are one of the most massive, ISM-enriched, and actively star-forming systems at z = 2–5. In addition, compared to less massive and less active galaxies at similar epochs, SMGs have comparable gas fractions; however, they have a much shorter depletion time, possibly caused by more active dynamical interactions. We determine a median dust emissivity index of β = 2.1 ± 0.1 for our sample, and by combining our results with those from other DSFG samples, we find no correlation of β with redshift or infrared luminosity, indicating similar dust grain compositions across cosmic time for infrared luminous galaxies. We also find that AS2COSPEC SMGs have one of the highest dust-to-stellar mass ratios, with a median of 0.02 ± 0.01, significantly higher than model predictions, possibly due to too-strong active galactic nucleus feedback implemented in the model. Finally, our complete and uniform survey enables us to put constraints on the most massive end of the dust and molecular gas mass functions.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon luminous galaxies in JWST CEERS data

ABSTRACT It has been an unanswered question how many dusty galaxies have been undetected from the state-of-the-art observational surveys. JWST enables us to detect faint infrared (IR) galaxies that have prominent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features in the mid-IR wavelengths. PAH is a valuable tracer of star formation and dust properties in the mid-IR wavelength. The JWST Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) fields provide us with wavelength coverage from 7.7 to 21 μm using six photometric bands of the mid-IR instrument (MIRI). We have identified galaxies dominated by mid-IR emission from PAHs, termed PAH galaxies. From our multiband photometry catalogue, we selected 10 PAH galaxies displaying high flux ratios of log (S15/S10) &amp;gt; 0.8. The SED fitting analysis indicates that these galaxies are star-forming galaxies with total IR luminosities of 1010 ∼ 1011.5 L⊙ at z ∼1. The morphology of PAH galaxies does not show any clear signatures of major merging or interaction within the MIRI resolution. The majority of them are on the star-formation main sequence at z ∼ 1. Our result demonstrates that JWST can detect PAH emissions from normal star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 1, in addition to ultra-luminous infrared galaxies or luminous IR galaxies (LIRGs).

[C ii] 158 μm emission as an indicator of galaxy star formation rate

ABSTRACT Observations of local star-forming galaxies (SFGs) show a tight correlation between their singly ionized carbon line luminosity ($L_{\rm [C\, {\small II}]}$) and star formation rate (SFR), suggesting that $L_{\rm [C\, {\small II}]}$ may be a useful SFR tracer for galaxies. Some other galaxy populations, however, are found to have lower $L_{\rm [C\, {\small II}]}{}/{}\rm SFR$ than local SFGs, including the infrared (IR)-luminous, starburst galaxies at low and high redshifts as well as some moderately SFGs at the epoch of re-ionization (EoR). The origins of this ‘$\rm [C\, {\small II}]$ deficit’ is unclear. In this work, we study the $L_{\rm [C\, {\small II}]}$–SFR relation of galaxies using a sample of z = 0–8 galaxies with $M_*\approx 10^7-5\times 10^{11}\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$ extracted from cosmological volume and zoom-in simulations from the Feedback in Realistic Environments (fire) project. We find a simple analytic expression for $L_{\rm [C\, {\small II}]}$/SFR of galaxies in terms of the following parameters: mass fraction of $\rm [C\, {\small II}]$-emitting gas ($f_{\rm [C\, {\small II}]}$), gas metallicity (Zgas), gas density (ngas), and gas depletion time ($t_{\rm dep}{}={}M_{\rm gas}{}/{}\rm SFR$). We find two distinct physical regimes: $\rm H_2$-rich galaxies, where tdep is the main driver of the $\rm [C\, {\small II}]$ deficit and $\rm H_2$-poor galaxies where Zgas is the main driver. The observed $\rm [C\, {\small II}]$ deficit of IR-luminous galaxies and early EoR galaxies, corresponding to the two different regimes, is due to short gas depletion time and low gas metallicity, respectively. Our result indicates that the $\rm [C\, {\small II}]$ deficit is a common phenomenon of galaxies, and caution needs to be taken when applying a constant $L_{\rm [C\, {\small II}]}$-to-SFR conversion factor derived from local SFGs to estimate cosmic SFR density at high redshifts and interpret data from upcoming $\rm [C\, {\small II}]$ line intensity mapping experiments.

The first ground-based detection of the 752 GHz water line in local ultra-luminous infrared galaxies using APEX-SEPIA

Abstract We report the first ground-based detection of the water line p-H2O (211–202) at 752.033 GHz in three z &amp;lt; 0.08 ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs): IRAS 06035-7102, IRAS 17207-0014 and IRAS 09022-3615. Using the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX), with its Swedish-ESO PI Instrument for APEX (SEPIA) band-9 receiver, we detect this H2O  line with overall signal-to-noise ratios of 8–10 in all three galaxies. Notably, this is the first detection of this line in IRAS 06035-7102. Our new APEX-measured fluxes, between 145 to 705 Jy km s−1, are compared with previous values taken from Herschel SPIRE FTS. We highlight the great capabilities of APEX for resolving the H2O  line profiles with high spectral resolutions while also improving by a factor of two the significance of the detection within moderate integration times. While exploring the correlation between the p-H2O(211–202) and the total infrared luminosity, our galaxies are found to follow the trend at the bright end of the local ULIRG’s distribution. The p-H2O(211–202) line spectra are compared to the mid-J CO and HCN spectra, and dust continuum previously observed with ALMA. In the complex interacting system IRAS 09022-3615, the profile of the water emission line is offset in velocity with respect to the ALMA CO(J = 4 − 3) emission. For IRAS 17207-0014 and IRAS 06035-7102, the profiles between the water line and the CO lines are spectroscopically aligned. This pilot study demonstrates the feasibility of directly conducting ground-based high-frequency observations of this key water line, opening the possibility of detailed follow-up campaigns to tackle its nature.

Stored in the archives: Uncovering the CN/CO intensity ratio with ALMA in nearby U/LIRGs

ABSTRACT We present an archival Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) study of the cyanide radical (CN) N = 1 − 0/carbon monoxide (CO) J = 1 − 0 intensity ratio in nearby (z &amp;lt; 0.05) ultra-luminous and luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs). We identify 16 U/LIRGs that have been observed in both CN and CO lines at ∼500 pc resolution based on 16 different ALMA projects. We measure the (CN bright)/CO and (CN bright)/(CN faint) intensity ratios at an ensemble of molecular clouds scales (CN bright = CN N = 1 − 0, J = 3/2 − 1/2; CN faint = CN N = 1 − 0, J = 1/2 − 1/2 hyperfine groupings). Our global measured (CN bright)/CO ratios range 0.02–0.15 in LIRGs and 0.08–0.17 in ULIRGs. We attribute the larger spread in LIRGs to the variety of galaxy environments included in our sample. Overall, we find that the (CN bright)/CO ratio is higher in nuclear regions, where the physical and excitation conditions favour increased CN emission relative to the disc regions. 10 out of 11 galaxies which contain well-documented active galactic nuclei show higher ratios in the nucleus compared with the disc. Finally, we measure the median resolved (CN bright)/(CN faint) ratio and use it to estimate the total integrated CN line optical depth in ULIRGs (τ ∼ 0.96) and LIRGs (τ ∼ 0.23). The optical depth difference is likely due to the higher molecular gas surface densities found in the more compact ULIRG systems.

How many stars form in galaxy mergers?

ABSTRACT We forward model the difference in stellar age between post-coalescence mergers and a control sample with the same stellar mass, environmental density, and redshift. In particular, we use a pure sample of 445 post-coalescence mergers from the recent visually confirmed post-coalescence merger sample identified by Bickley et al. and find that post-coalescence mergers are on average younger than control galaxies for 10 &amp;lt; log (M⋆/M⊙) &amp;lt; 11. The difference in age from matched controls is up to 1.5 Gyr, highest for lower stellar mass galaxies. We forward model this difference using parametric star formation histories, accounting for the pre-coalescence inspiral phase of enhanced star formation using close pair data, and a final additive burst of star formation at coalescence. We find a best-fitting stellar mass burst fraction of fburst = ΔM⋆/M⋆, merger = 0.18 ± 0.02 for 10 &amp;lt; log (M⋆/M⊙) &amp;lt; 11 galaxies, with no evidence of a trend in stellar mass. The modelled burst fraction is robust to choice of parametric star formation history, as well as differences in burst duration. The result appears consistent with some prior observationally derived values, but is significantly higher than that found in hydrodynamical simulations. Using published luminous infrared galaxy star formation rates, we find a burst duration increasing with stellar mass, from 120 to 250 Myr. A comparison to published cold gas measurements indicates there is enough molecular gas available in very close pairs to fuel the burst. Additionally, given our stellar mass burst estimate, the predicted cold gas fraction remaining after the burst is consistent with observed post-coalescence mergers.

The IR Compactness of Dusty Galaxies Sets Star Formation and Dust Properties at z ∼ 0–2

The surface densities of gas, dust, and stars provide a window into the physics of star formation that, until the advent of high-resolution far-IR/submillimeter observations, has been historically difficult to assess among dusty galaxies. To study the link between IR surface densities and dust properties, we leverage the Atacama Large Millimetre/Submillimetre Array archive to measure the extent of cold dust emission in 15 z ∼ 2 IR-selected galaxies selected on the basis of having available mid-IR spectroscopy from Spitzer. We use the mid-IR spectra to constrain the relative balance between dust heating from star formation and active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and to measure emission from polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), small dust grains that play a key role in the photoelectric heating of gas. In general, we find that dust-obscured star formation at high IR surface densities exhibits similar properties at low and high redshift, namely, local luminous IR galaxies (LIRGs) have comparable PAH luminosity to total dust mass ratios as high-z galaxies, and star formation at z ∼ 0–2 is more efficient at high IR surface densities despite the fact that our sample of high-z galaxies is closer to the main sequence than local LIRGs. High star formation efficiencies are coincident with a decline in the PAH-to-IR luminosity ratio reminiscent of the deficit observed in far-IR fine-structure lines. Changes in the gas and dust conditions arising from high star formation surface densities might help drive the star formation efficiency up. This could help explain the high efficiencies needed to reconcile star formation and gas volume densities in dusty galaxies at cosmic noon.

Graph Theoretical Analysis of local ultraluminous infrared galaxies and quasars

We present a methodological framework for studying galaxy evolution by utilizing Graph Theory and network analysis tools. We study the evolutionary processes of local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) and quasars and the underlying physical processes, such as star formation and active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity, through the application of Graph Theoretical analysis tools. We extract, process and analyze mid-infrared spectra of local (z ¡ 0.4) ULIRGs and quasars between 5-38μm through internally developed Python routines, in order to generate similarity graphs, with the nodes representing ULIRGs being grouped together based on the similarity of their spectra. Additionally, we extract and compare physical features from the mid-IR spectra, such as the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emission and silicate depth absorption features, as indicators of the presence of star-forming regions and obscuring dust, in order to understand the underlying physical mechanisms of each evolutionary stage of ULIRGs. Our analysis identifies five groups of local ULIRGs based on their mid-IR spectra, which is quite consistent with the well established fork classification diagram by providing a higher level classification. We demonstrate how graph clustering algorithms and network analysis tools can be utilized as unsupervised learning techniques for revealing direct or indirect relations between various galaxy properties and evolutionary stages, which provides an alternative methodology to previous works for classification in galaxy evolution. Additionally, our methodology compares the output of several graph clustering algorithms in order to demonstrate the best-performing Graph Theoretical tools for studying galaxy evolution.

The Large Deficit of HMXB Emission from Luminous Infrared Galaxies: The Case of the Circumnuclear Starburst Ring in NGC 7552

Luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), the most extreme star-forming galaxies in the nearby (D < 30 Mpc) universe, show a notable X-ray emission deficiency (up to a factor of ∼10) compared with predictions from scaling relations of galaxy-wide high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) luminosity with star formation rate. In the nearby (≈20 Mpc) LIRG NGC 7552, the majority of the IR emission originates in a circumnuclear starburst ring, which has been resolved into several discrete knots of star formation. We present results from recent Chandra observations of NGC 7552, which reveal significant deficits in the 2–7 keV X-ray luminosities from two of the most powerful star-forming knots. We hypothesize that the expected luminous HMXB populations in these knots are either (1) obscured by very large column densities or (2) suppressed due to the knots having relatively high metallicity and/or very young ages (≲5 Myr). We distinguish between these possibilities using data from recent NuSTAR observations, whose sensitivity above 10 keV is capable of uncovering heavily obscured HMXB populations, since emission at these energies is more immune to absorption effects. We find no evidence of a heavily obscured HMXB population in the central region of NGC 7552, suggesting suppressed HMXB formation. We further show that metallicity-dependent scaling relations cannot fully account for the observed deficit from the most powerful star-forming knots or the central region as a whole. Thus, we suggest that recent bursts in local star formation activity likely drive the high L IR within these regions on timescales ≲5 Myr, shorter than the timescale required for the formation of HMXBs.

A Diverse Population of z ∼ 2 ULIRGs Revealed by JWST Imaging

Four ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) observed with JWST/NIRcam in the Cosmos Evolution Early Release Science program offer an unbiased preview of the z ∼ 2 ULIRG population. The objects were originally selected at 24 μm and have strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission features observed with Spitzer/Infrared Spectrometer. The four objects have similar stellar masses of ∼1011 M ⊙ but otherwise are quite diverse. One is an isolated disk galaxy, but it has an active nucleus as shown by X-ray observations and by a bright point-source nucleus. Two others are merging pairs with mass ratios of 6–7:1. One has active nuclei in both components, while the other has only one active nucleus: the one in the less-massive neighbor, not the ULIRG. The fourth object is clumpy and irregular and is probably a merger, but there is no sign of an active nucleus. The intrinsic spectral energy distributions for the four active galactic nuclei in these systems are typical of type-2 QSOs. This study is consistent with the idea that even if internal processes can produce large luminosities at z ∼ 2, galaxy merging may still be necessary for the most luminous objects. The diversity of these four initial examples suggests that large samples will be needed to understand the z ∼ 2 ULIRG population.

Resolving a merger in a hyperluminous submillimeter galaxy at z = 2.82

ABSTRACT We present the resolved properties of the z = 2.82 hyperluminous infrared Galaxy (HyLIRG) HS1700.850.1, the brightest 850 $\mu$m source found in the SCUBA-2 followup to the Keck Baryonic Structure Survey fields (S850$\mu$m =19.5 mJy), and amongst the most luminous starbursts known at any redshift.- Using the IRAM-NOEMA interferometer in the highest resolution A-configuration, we resolve the source into two components separated by ∼8 kpc, visible as blue shifted and red shifted 12CO(5–4) lines, exhibiting the expected kinematic properties of a major merger between two gas rich Galaxies. The combined merger system is traced over 2.3 arcsec or 18.4 kpc. Each component of the merger shows ordered gas motions suggestive of a massive turbulent disc. We measure the dynamical masses of the blue and red discs as (1.5 ± 0.2) × 1011 and (0.71 ± 0.22) × 1011 M⊙, respectively. The more massive disc component shows broad wings in the CO line, offset by ∼3 kpc from the disc centroid along the major axis, and extending to velocities ∼±1000 km $\rm {s^{-1}}$ from systemic velocity. We interpret this as either a possible bipolar outflowing component, or more likely a warping or tidal structure in the CO disc. Comparing the properties of HS1700.850.1 to other submillimeter detected galaxies with comparably bright 850 $\mu$m luminosities suggests that ongoing gas-rich mergers, or at least a clustered/group environment lead to these most extreme starburst phases.
